The Hypodermic Needle Theory

The Hypodermic Needle Theory was a theory that was around in the 1940's and 1950's that questioned the effect in which the media had on society. It was proclaimed that the human mind absorbed the information provided by media sources passively and did not further question or challenge the way in which it was to be perceived/interpreted; their individual intelligence and opinions were not seen as relevant to the reception of the subject. The theory was originally first created in the 1920's after researchers/theorists observed the effect of using propaganda to communicate; this was especially prominent during the World War. Although there were many limitations to this theory, it is still very much referred to today when discussing the effect of social media on today's society.

For example, the rapid rise to popularity of video games such as Grand Theft Auto- which is described as "violently and sexually explicit"- has been frequently questioned and put under intense scrutiny as to whether or not it provokes such behaviours within the more influential audiences (younger generations).
